With a growing fan base, well played live shows, and a sophomore album that shines, the Dutch group Alamo Race Track is defining their place in the indie music scene. All the most important makings of a successful band are in place, not least of all, real talent. For anyone wanting to see a quality rock performance, Alamo Race Track is a gig that should not be missed.

Alamo Race Track played their sixth Paris gig on Thursday night October 19th at La Fleche D’Or, a slightly crowded but atmospheric venue in the 11th arrondissement. It seems the crowd was a good sign, gathering here to see who was undoubtedly the star of the night: an indie Dutch rock quartet from Amsterdam, who appeared to be in their element here in this smoky little Parisian club.
They began the show with immediate energy, and despite a couple of minor technical problems early on, the band showed humour and control in patching up and continuing to play an impeccable set.
In no time they had the crowd excited and moving, and when they began playing the title hit Black Cat John Brown, they had their fans’ full attention, many of whom knew the words and were singing along with enthusiasm.
Lead singer Ralph Mulder, whose powerful voice is suggestive of The Killers’ Brandon Flowers, cast a fervent spell over the crowd with his raw energy and charisma. His distinct and confident manner, leaning passionately into the mic and then joining bassist David for an undulating duo of guitar and deep danceable bass lines, leaves no doubt this band has massive stage presence and potential.
Also on stage this evening was Hulya Kiliçaslan, who added another lively ingredient to the show, dancing around the band members in sync with the music and singing backup for a few songs. Her presence was an effective catalyst to further inspire the audience’s interest.
Playing songs from their forthcoming second album (due to October 31st), full of punchy rhythms and perfectly framed by David’s chorus backing vocals and Guy’s powerful drumbeats à la The Strokes, Alamo Race Track delivers a profound and emotional whirlwind of sound. The soaring guitar patterns on songs like Chocolate years and The northern territory demonstrate a sophisticated rock with certain elements of pop, and have about the same level of intensity as an Interpol track.
The choppy guitar riffs with appropriately accompanied bits of keyboard effects serve up an infectious energy that gets you moving and leaves you with melodies that ring in your head for days to come. The band seems to be on an uphill evolution, and though still experimenting with various styles and sounds, they manage to pull it all together into a cohesive batch of fun, energetic tunes with inimitable style.
