Stuck In The Sound "Le son du succès"

Read english version

Stuck In The Sound First up tonight was Hey Hey My My, who present some enchanting and melodic folk songs with a rock edge. With clean, catchy tunes, and a fiery spirit, they fall gently someplace between The Shins and Modest Mouse. On stage they performed well and with as much energy and jumpiness as their hi-fi pop melodies would allow. Singer Julien’s crooning voice is pleasant but seemed a bit shaky at points tonight. Two standout tracks of the set were In The Lake a pretty segment of provocative rock jamming, and Celia, which escalated from simple guitar chords to an energetic rock ballad. Hey Hey My My are following their own lead and going in their own direction, against the grain of the French rock scene. Classy, quality music, which turned out to be the calm before the storm.

Stuck In The Sound When Stuck In The Sound step on stage they are met with a rapturous applause from the crowd of twenty-something Parisian cult rock fans who confidently know what they are in for. The band’s deservedly strong reputation for electrifying stage performance is celebrated here in France, and beginning to draw as many international supporters as well. The Paris born-and-bred foursome trace the thread of archetypal 70’s rock and post-punk, all lyrics in English, and have the potential to rise to the heights of any British or American rock charts. This requires a good amount of musical talent, but its not lacking here. Thirteen tracks, mostly taken from the November 2006 release Nevermind the Living Dead , are played without a hitch, driving the crowd quickly into a frenzy. Frontman Jose interacts well with the audience, casting a spell on them with his enthusiasm and expressiveness. He asks “Vous etes prêt a danser??” before beginning ToyBoy and by the third chord the entire crowd is jumping up and down as if on pogo sticks. During the eccentric Cramp Push and Take it Easy a mosh pit appears to begin forming, followed by a steady roll of crowd surfing. By the end of the show, we are sweating from head to toe. And we are just standing in the back.

Stuck In The Sound The authenticity and originality of their music is refreshing. They are plainly dressed in t-shirts, jeans and jackets; no big style statements to make here. They let the music take the lead, and it does so well. Jose’s wild and tormented vocals are well showcased within a framework of patchy, searing guitar riffs and speedy bass lines. Wide-ranging and stunning, and sounding like a semi-crossover of Morissey, Robert Smith , and the more recent parallel The Mars Volta , he captivates the crowd well with a unique performance including some… we’ll say… interesting, dancing bits during the punk-laden fiasco of It’s (Friday). It reminds us of Beck somehow. The band’s sound has often been rightly compared to The Smiths as well as The Pixies, effectively incorporating rhythmic sections and welcome spots of dissonance. The consistently pulsing drums and escalating guitar on Don’t Go Henry was a definite highlight of the evening, as well as a new track called Fairytale, which was the second encore and a beautiful Grande Finale indeed.

The show was worthy of a spot at any major rock music festival, in fact it’s most likely only a matter of time. They are becoming a big name in Europe these days, and if their following album and upcoming shows continue in this direction, we will surely see a lot more of them. These guys are notorious for hard work and dedication in the studio, and it could pay off very soon.
